My puppy Orion is my baby child. We don’t have kids yet and she sure is a handful, being a white German shepherd and lab mix. She is a ball of energy! I want the best for my child, and unfortunately the dog food industry is known for using undesirable and toxic ingredients in their foods. In other words, not for my puppy! Even living in Los Angeles, there are not a lot of options when it comes to organic dog treats. There are very few selections and can be a bit pricey for the quantity. So why not make your own? These homemade sweet potato and peanut butter dog treats are vegan, grain-free, and easy to make. They are made with super clean ingredients, are rich in fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and you will yield more than the little bag of treats they sell at stores. Orion loves peanut butter so once these treats start drying in the dehydrator, she starts camping out in front of it, hoping to score some. And she’s usually pretty successful. If you don’t have a dehydrator, you can just bake them in the oven instead. I’m sure your pups will love them too!
Let’s make your precious puppy some homemade yummy treats! You will need some sweet potatoes, shredded coconut, peanut butter, and coconut flour or any grain-free flour of your choice. I have a ton of home made coconut flour left over from making coconut milk, so I used it, but you can use almond flour, etc. You may also use the commercial coconut flour too. You can easily make your own nut or seed flour by drying the leftover pulp from making nut and seed milks. Simply dry the pulp in the dehydrator, then blend in a blender until a fine flour is reached. Sift the flour if you are going to use it in pastry recipes, but for this, you can skip the sifting.
Roughly chop the sweet potatoes and add it into the food processor along with the shredded coconut. Blend until everything becomes a fine mince. Scrape the sides of the food processor in between blending. Add in some peanut butter and blend.
Once it becomes a thick paste, add in the coconut flour or the flour or your choice. Blend until it forms a dough about the firmness of your earlobe. The amount of flour needed will vary depending on the flour you use.
Flour the board with some of the remaining flour you used in the mix, or lay down the silicone sheet for the dehydrator. I like rolling the dough out on the silicone sheet as the dough doesn’t stick to it and it makes for an easy clean up. Roll out the dough into 1/4″ thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut it into your desired shapes. You can always roll the dough into round small cookies by hand also.
If you are using a dehydrator, line the dehydrator tray with a mesh sheet. Lay the treats down and dry at 115℉(46℃) for 24 hours until completely dry. After a few hours of drying, flip the treats upside down for even drying.
Once they are completely dry, store them in an air-tight container and these will last for a month.
If you are using an oven, preheat the oven at 350℉ (175℃). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and lay the treats down. Bake for 25-30 mins. Let it cool completely before storing in an air-tight container.
Annnnnnnd, they’re done! Your puppy will be a very “regular” and happy camper!

Hi. Do I need to cook the sweet potato first? Thank you
admin
Hi Tammy,
Thank you for your comment. You don’t have to cook the sweet potato first and I use it raw, but you can if you prefer to. I would cool it off first before you use it in the recipe. Thank you!
Tammy
Thank you. I will try both to see which the pups like better!

Can I change up the sweet potato for butternut squash?
admin
Hi Vanessa,
I am very sorry for the late response once again.
You probably moved on from this question, but for what its worth, yes, you can use butternut squash instead.
I truly apologize for the delayed response.
