Matcha green tea latte is quite possibly my favorite latte. I mean, I love anything matcha so of course it’s my favorite, right? One of my lovely readers from Japan, just sent me a beautiful top notch organic matcha the other day as a gift. I opened up the cute little package and this gorgeous vibrant green beamed out! If you open up your matcha and the color’s so bright and vibrant, it’s almost gleaming like this one, you know it’s good, (of course, the ingredients should only be matcha and it should never have any added coloring).
So I had to make myself my raw vegan matcha green tea latte, stat! Matcha is great on hot summer days to quench your thirst, as it is loaded with anti-oxidants, 137 times more than regular green tea to be exact. This recipe is fast, easy, and delicious. Matcha latte will fit the bill and more!
Before we start, I want to quickly touch on the difference between matcha and regular green tea. No, they are not the same, so you can’t use regular green tea in place of matcha. Matcha is intense in flavor, and is a perfect balance of bitterness and sweet, a very different flavor profile than regular green tea. Though they both are made from green tea, the difference is in how they are grown and processed, that results in the significant difference between them. Tea leaves grown for matcha are shaded, so that the leaves remain sweet and tender. Then they are picked and milled using a mill stone. It is much more labor intensive, and the higher price range of matcha reflects it. On the contrary, tea leaves grown for regular green tea are grown in the full sunlight without any shading, then picked, steamed, massaged, and dried. Two very different processes results in the very different flavor. And now you know the difference.
Ok, enough talking! Let’s make this awesome matcha latte! Add the almond milk, matcha, maple syrup, and vanilla extract into a blender. Check out raw vegan almond milk to see how to easily make your own homemade almond milk.
Blend until it becomes a beautiful jade green matcha latte! Boom! That’s it!
Pour it into a glass filled with ice and top it with some coconut whipped cream or raw vegan coconut whipped cream, then dust some matcha on top! Now you know how to easily make some legitimate raw vegan matcha latte at home. Bottom’s up!
- 3 cups almond milk
- 1 Tablespoon - 1 Tablespoon + ½ teaspoon matcha powder
- 2 - 4 Tablespoons maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- 2 teaspoons non-alcohol vanilla extract
- Some coconut whipped cream or raw vegan coconut whipped cream and dusting of matcha for garnish
- Add all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour into a glass filled with ice and top it with some coconut whipped cream and a dusting of the matcha on top.
I recommend using the coconut whipped cream (not raw but vegan and gluten-free)over the raw vegan coconut whipped cream. Making raw vegan coconut whipped cream is quite a bit labor intensive compared to the non-raw one, and I think it's unnecessary to go through that just to use as a topping for a latte.
Am I reading this right? 2 tablespoons plus 1/2 tsp of matcha? Won’t that be enough caffeine for 5 elehants? Lol. I drink matcha every day and it’s 1/2 tsp.
Hi Jessica,
Thank you for your comment. The recipe is 1 tablespoons to 1 tablespoon + 1/2 tsp of matcha. So either 1 tablespoon of matcha, or 1 tablespoon + 1/2 teaspoon of matcha if you like it stronger. Us Japanese take iced matcha on the stronger side and sweeten it like sweet tea in the South. We also don’t drink matcha everyday either. We do drink green tea everyday but not necessarily matcha. But please adjust the matcha amount to your liking! Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you!
Hello Jessica, Also the recipe is for that anount matcha PLUS 3 CUPS almond milk AND ICE. So the dilution and flavor in cold liquid should be just fine! Thank you Ms Mariko!
Where did you buy those cups?
Thank you for your comment!
I think I got these at World Market. But it has been a few years, so I am not sure if these are something they bring back every year.
Thank you!
